TOURNAMENT RULES Revised January 2019

 

1. Kingdom of the Outlands’ Arts and Sciences Tournament is open to all SCA members.

2. No item may be entered which has previously won or placed in any other Outlands’ Kingdom A&S Tournament. Entries from Queen’s Prize Tournament will be accepted.

3. Any single item will be entered in only one category.

4. A winner will be announced for each division unless there is only one entry in that division. The highest point score will determine the winner of that division. These winners will be announced via e-mail and in the Kingdom newsletter. They may also be announced at court, depending on the available time schedule. The final decision will reside with the Kingdom Arts & Sciences Minister. No prizes are awarded for division winners. The divisions are as follows: a. Visual Arts - Paint and Ink b. Fiber Arts - Fiber Arts, Costuming c. Domestic Arts - Brewing and Beverage, Cooking, Flora and Fauna d. Bardic Arts - Performing Arts, Letters(non-research) e. Sciences - Sciences, Letters(research) f. Functional Arts - Metal, Leather, Earthenware, Stone, Glass, Wood, Bookbinding

 

5. Each entrant wishing to compete for overall A&S Champion is required to enter two items in two different categories. a. Categories are as follows:

1. Bookbinding

2. Brewing

3. Costuming

4. Earthenware

5. Fiber Arts

6. Flora and Fauna

7. Glass

8. Leatherworking

9. Letters - Non-Research

10. Letters - Research

11. Metalworking

12. Performing Arts

13. Cooking

14. Sciences

15. Stone working

16. Visual Arts - Painted & Inked

17. Woodworking

 

6. Overall scores will be tallied and the entrant with the highest overall average will be declared the Champion. In the event of a tie in the averages, the entrant with the highest single score of the two will be declared the winner.

 

7. If Champion requirements are NOT met, alternate Champion requirements will be determined by the Crown or the Kingdom A&S Minister, i.e., the highest single score.

 

8. An entry’s total score will be an average of the two scores given by the judges in that division.

 

9. The five entrants with the top overall scores (not including the champion) will be announced via e-mail and in the Kingdom newsletter. They may also be announced at court, depending on the available time schedule.

 

10. Entrants will receive a scanned copy of their comment sheets by email within a week of the competition. Original comment sheets are copied and archived by the Arts & Sciences office. 11. Each entrant must be on site and should be available to speak with the judges. If there are special issues, please contact the Kingdom A&S Minister.

 

12. Entrants must preregister for the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Tournament before the event. Preregistration must include contact information and email as well as a summary of their entry.

 

13. If the entry is in the form of a scholarly paper, it must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the competition.

 

14. The entrant shall complete all work prior to entry. If the entry is a group effort, this must be clearly noted in the documentation.

 

15. Actual pieces must be entered – no photographs or reproductions will be accepted.

 

16. Items manufactured from kits are not eligible for entry; templates, though, may be used.

 

17. The Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences and designated representatives reserve the right to combine any categories not receiving sufficient entries into a miscellaneous class.

 

18. Display only entries must be registered. Displays are dependent on room availablility in the venue. Some venues may not have enough room to house the displays, and priority will be given to competitors.

 

19. Entries must be on-site and checked in by 9:00 am on the day of the event.

 

20. The Kingdom Minister of Arts & Sciences and designated representatives reserve the right to make exceptions to the above rules on a case-by-case basis.
